(chat rooms) at the same time, talk publicly, private one-on-one conversations etc. Even file transfers are possible.

XChat for Windows users are advised to upgrade to 2.8.7c due to a security issue. This affects people browsing the web with Internet Explorer while XChat is running. The problem does not exist if Firefox is your default browser.
After some complaining and whining from a few people about how long it's taking, we've finally released a new Linux version: 2.8.6, enjoy.
A major new version of XChat for Windows has been released today: 2.8.7. Some of the new features including screenshots are listed in this forum post. Update 15/Apr/08: This version has now been superseded by 2.8.7a. 14/Jun/08: This version has now been superseded by 2.8.7c.
Released XChat 2.8.5e, a smaller conservative release. A highlight in this version is being able to use OpenSSL again. It should also be noted that Windows 98/ME support has now been dropped.
XChat 2.8.5c is out today. This is a bug fix release, which includes a fix to the problem a few people reported, connecting to a sBNC or ZNC via SSL.

The most notable improvement is probably the moveable components, that is, you can move the userlist and tree around to different positions with the mouse [youtube video]. A release for GNU/Linux with similar features will follow soon.
Development is under way to standardise a IRC services protocol. We will be supporting an effort at irc-plus.org and I urge all IRC server authors to get involved. This is all designed to make registering nick-names and logging in to IRC easier for end-users. That is, with a GUI, without having to remember complicated commands.

Released a bug fix version: 2.8.3c. The automatic crash reporting that was added in previous versions has allowed us to fix lots of rare crash bugs, which should make this release one of the most stable yet. Update 19/3: Updated links to version 2.8.3c.

Development is underway on a new series: 2.8.x. Currently you can test 2.7.90 on Linux, feedback would be appreciated. The major addition in this version is system-tray integration. It's already quite stable and usable.

A few security web sites are reporting a 'Denial of Service' vulnerability in XChat <= 2.6.7 for Windows. This is incorrect, 2.6.7 is not affected, nor is 2.6.5, 2.6.3 or any recent version. 9/9/6 Update: Details.
